This cutie has become a big sister!  While the new baby had a special photo shoot to show off her newborn wrinkles and curls, Kinsey needed a day to celebrate her as well!

This little one is so full of life and creativity and will just tell it like it is.  She is never at a loss for words and is an absolute joy to work with!

This is what the love of a sister looks like!  These two could not be more in love with each other.

And…the many, many, many faces of Kinsey. She’s always up to something and keeps you on your toes.  This little joy is going to be a world changer!

Last Thursday I stood in my house taking one last look around trying to decide if there was anything left that I would be heartbroken to loose. Having received the notice that we were under a mandatory evacuation due to hurricane Matthew making it’s way up the coast, I had packed up all of my valuables, not knowing what I would come home to…or if there would be a home to come home to.

treasures from hurricane matthewOf all of the “stuff” in my home, the things that mattered the most in that moment were the photos of my family. The couches and dishes and even my newborn props could be replaced, but these photos are priceless and precious to me.  There was the album of photos that my mom put together of my first few days of life and the photo of my hero, my Great Grandmother Clara Belle, as a little girl with her family that I simply could not leave behind. I also made sure to make room for my baby book that holds some of my most precious treasures.

Thankfully the storm turned and weakened just enough to keep us from the 9-12 foot swells that they had warned us of, which would surely have ruined my home and many many more.  We were truly blessed that the storm did not cause the catastrophic damage which was expected.

As I have looked back on the last week I have found myself wondering why it was those items that I chose above all of the others to bring with me. At first I thought it was just because, as a family photographer, I am naturally drawn to photos. But, I think it’s deeper than that. Much deeper.

Family photos show us where we came from, where we belong, and remind us that we are never alone. Looking back at that photo of my Great Grandmother, I am reminded of a woman who worked hard her entire life, lived through some of the toughest times that our nation faced, and loved God with an unstoppable love. As I have thumbed through the album of my first days I saw in my mother’s eyes the love and amazement that she had as she held me in her arms. And in my baby book there is a dollar that can NEVER be replaced (among many other treasures).

family-photosFamily photos, when displayed beautifully on your walls, remind us that we belong. That no matter what life throws our way, we can always come home, not to a house, but to a family.  They capture the love and connection that we have that can never be replaced.

When I am photographing a family or a wedding or a newborn, my goals are always the same: capture the true personality of each person and capture their connection with one another.  Because, in the end, that is all that really matters. That’s how we want to remember and be remembered.

In light of all of that…I am setting a lofty goal for myself this fall of photographing 25 families! Even typing that number is a little scary for me. But, I want to capture the love and connection of 25 different families before we put a close to 2016 and if I put it out there for the world to see…then I HAVE to do it! Right?

Will you help me reach my 25 family goal?  Will you help me create these treasures of belonging for 25 families? How, you might be asking yourself:

  1. Allow me to photograph your family!
Let’s create some images of your family that show your love for each other and unique connection with each other.
  2. Refer me to a friend!
For each referral that books and completes a 2016 session you will receive $25 towards your next session fee (there is no limit to the amount that you can earn)!  Think about it, if you refer four friends who book sessions then your next session is free!  It doesn’t get much better than that.

Book your session today.

Now that the storm has passed I’ve been holed up at my sisters house thinking about just how thankful that I am for family.  Through rain or shine, hard times and good times, no matter where we are…we are family. That is all that matters! And whenever we are together we are home. Today I am thankful for home. I am thankful that even if the winds had blown my house away or the floods had invaded, I could still find home. Because home isn’t a house…it’s whenever I’m with you!

These last few weeks have been full of family sessions that have been such a sweet reminder of how special and unique each family is.  None of them look the same. None of them act the same. There is not one family that is the same.  They are all uniquely beautiful creations and watching the connection that happens at our sessions amazes me EVERY single time.

I’ve known this little guy since he was just days old. It’s hard to believe that he is a wild & free 4 year old already! So, when I got the call from Valerie that she had received news of a cancer diagnosis we jumped to schedule a photo shoot for her and Landon. She wanted to document their connection with one another…before surgery…before chemo…before their lives changed forever.  It was such an honor to get to watch this brave mamma hold her baby tightly and play freely. You’d never know that just two days after this session she underwent major surgery. Praise God the reports that came back were all overwhelmingly positive!

One of the things that I STRIVE to capture during every session is connection. And even thought Landon didn’t want to sit still or slow down, I think we captured his HUGE personality and the connection of this momma and son so perfectly! These small moments are the ones that matter, the ones we want to cherish, the ones that get us through the hard times.

“Lion of Judah, shepherd and keep mommy and Landon all the days of our life.”

As we were exploring Epworth By The Sea, Landon stopped to draw in the sand like any boy would do.  Watching him, I couldn’t help but notice how intent he was on what he was creating.  This wasn’t just “playing in the sand.” So I asked him what he was drawing. “Family.” was his simple reply. Then it dawned on me…In the movie “Good Dinosaur” Arlo was trying his best to communicate his deep sadness over loosing his family with his new little human friend, so he collected sticks representing each member of his family and then encircled them in the sand, “family.”  Family is The Most Important Thing!!!

Flowers have been a special gift from Landon to his momma since she received her cancer diagnosis.  Little reminders of the simple beauty that surrounds us and new life that is continually springing forth!  We reached the gardens at Epworth By The Sea and Landon just couldn’t resist picking a few special flowers to share.

It was a simply beautiful day out so we decided to finish up the session with some ice cream and a bit of play at the park! It doesn’t get much cuter than this…

Every night I ask him, “Do you know how much I love you?” And he says, ” a moon back and ever and ever.”

Take a minute and leave this sweet momma and her little some words of encouragement in the comments below.  I’m sure she would love to have them to treasure!

Valerie, this story is beautiful, you and Landon are beautiful and I pray that your cancer allows you to have many many more beautiful moments just like these. You are an inspiration!

I just love the connection my beautifully spiritual woman of God friend has with her son. Since 18 years ago, Val has ALWAYS been special in my life. Your belief, faith and the passionate love of God has enlightened you for the doubtful believers. Yes, God has given you an AWESOME testimony! WE LOVE YOU VAL!

They call me the “baby whisperer” for a reason. It takes most littles a while to warm up to a new face, especially one with a camera in front of it. And who blames them!!! That weirdo making faces and weird noises is just….well…strange. But this little one didn’t have any problems at all loosening up and hamming it up for the camera!

This little one had us all laughing as she mimicked everything that I did! Getting down on there level is key to those picture perfect grins, but she wanted to get right down with me! So much cuteness! There is nothing sweeter than making a new friend…even if she’s only 18 months old.

You can always tell a family that is full of love…and this one was most definitely FULL!  I loved watching the way they connected with one another and were able to just relax and be their beautiful selves.

Oh my heart. These two boys have kicked the cuteness meter over the top! They are 100% boy…both of them! We had so much fun exploring Jekyll Island for their session and I do believe that we were able to capture these BIG personalities.  From finding a stick that looked like Olaf’s hand to climbing every oak tree in sight these guys had me on my toes!  (I wouldn’t have it any other way.)

I love that even at 2 and 4 you can already tell how different these boys are going to be, but also, how very alike they are. The connection between brothers is so much fun to see forming even at such a young age. I have no doubt that these two will be more than just brothers…they will be friends.

So….meet the Cheek boys!!!!
